Hiding $58 Mio… in a shack

The BBC reports that Japanese authorities have raided two sisters who were hiding money inherited from their father:

>Tax officials say the sisters hid almost 6bn yen ($58m) in cardboard boxes and paper bags at their home in the city of Osaka.
>
>[The two sisters] declared a fraction of that amount to the authorities, allegedly stashing the rest away, and thereby avoiding 2.86b yen ($28m) in inheritance tax.

>A tax official said they had concealed most of the money in cash in a shed attached to the house.

Alright, I guess this is probably not specific Japanese behavior. But if you have this much money, you know what to do: Get it out of the country or, if that isn’t easily accomplished (Japan is a bunch of islands after all), launder it.

Storing it in paper bags until the cops come is just weird.
